| Q. What is Geothermal heating and cooling?
A. Basically, it is a system of transfering BTU's to heat and cool a home or building. It does this transfer using a small amount of electricity
Q. Can a Geothermal system really save me money on fuel bills?
A. Yes most definitely! Refering to the question above, it can reduce your bills because each BTU of electricity can transfer 3-4 BTU's of heat or cooling. To determine how much savings, contact a geothermal heating/cooling contractor and they can run an analysis using your fuel costs and electric costs.
Q. Are there any rebates being offered by the utility companies?
A. Yes. You will need to talk to your electric supplier to find out about their program.
Q. Geothermal costs more to install than a conventional system, is there anything I can do to reduce upfront costs?
A. The geothermal system needs to be sized to the load of the house. Anything that reduces the load will reduce, not only the upfront costs, but the operating costs as well. These things can be better windows, make sure every crack or joint is caulked- sill and floor plates, sistered studs, windows etc. Then consider the insulation. A better insulation package will cost more than fiberglass, but the reduction in load and corresponding reduction in equipment size will more than offset the added cost for the insulation. The product we prefer is a wet blown cellulose by Nu-Wool. Give us a call for a dealer near you.
Q. Can Geothermal be retro-fitted to an older home?
A. Yes in most cases. The main issue will be is if youe existing duct work is large enough to handle the air flow. In many cases, retro fits are geothermal's best salesman. By making no other changes to the home, but adding geothermal, owners can really see the operating savings.
Q. Is the solution used in the loop system environmentally safe?
A. Yes, we only use a food grade propolene glycol. It's used in many of the foods we eat.
Q. What's the first step if I want a geothermal system in my new or existing home?
A. Well, you've started out right by doing some research and you found us! The next step is to find a heating/cooling contractor who is trained in geothermal and wants to work with you. Then he needs to do a complete load calculation of your home.
Q. Is there a difference in the performance between a horizontal loop and a vertical loop system?
A. Essentially no, if they are designed and installed properly
Q. How far will Enviro-Tec travel to install a loop system?
A. Good question. The answer is about 300 miles so far, but once you've got your bags packed.....
